Terry Ballantine Bisson (innate February 12, 1942) is an American science fiction and fantasy author. He is better known for his short stories, including "Bears Discover Fire" (1990), which won both a Hugo and Nebula awards, but has likewise written many novels, including Voyage to the Red Planet (Morrow, 1990), Pirates of the Universe (Tor, 1996) & A Pickup Artist (Tor, 2001). The popular urban legend among science fiction fans is that Gardner Dozois, editor of Asimov's Science Fiction told Bisson to add "bears discovering fire or something" to the story of that name so that it could be considered a science fiction story, though Dozois has denied this.

Bisson was natural within Owensboro, Kentucky. He graduated from either a University of Louisville in 1964 and currently sleep in Oakland, California.
